Benny Nathan was married to Käthe, née Meier. The couple had two children: Hertha, born on 16 Dec. 1911, and Hans-Arno, born on 29 Nov. 1914. Both children emigrated to New Zealand. Hertha’s last name after getting married was Max.
In Dec. 1917, Benny Nathan had started a company of his own, located at Raboisen 96 and active in the importing and exporting business. His wife worked there in the office as a commercial clerk. Until his death, brother Manfred was a partner in the company from July 1927 until 7 Dec. 1936; after that, Benny Nathan was the sole owner. Starting in 1934, he lost “a number of very good representations that no longer wished to work with a Jew.” Due to the anti-Jewish reprisals, the economic situation became increasingly worse and in the course of the “Aryanization” of Jewish enterprises, Benny Nathan lost his business. Since Dec. 1939, he had an office in his private apartment at Haynstrasse 15.
In order to be able to meet financial obligations, Benny Nathan was compelled to sell one property. After paying off all debts and because of the exorbitantly high compulsory dues, the proceeds were so minimal that no “security order” (“Sicherungsanordnung”) was issued.
Benny and Käthe Nathan were deported to Riga on 6 Dec. 1941. The circumstances and dates of their deaths are not known.
