The biographies
in this databasebring the people behind Stolpersteine
into focus.
Stolpersteine commemorate victims of Nazi persecution and terror. These small brass plaques are set into the pavement at the places where these people lived and worked. In just a few words, they tell a life story – from the year of birth, through the course of persecution, and often to a violent death.
The Stolpersteine were created by the artist Gunter Demnig. He lays them throughout Germany, across Europe, and also in Hamburg. Each stone is funded through a private sponsorship. There are several thousand Stolpersteine in Hamburg. They are part of the cityscape and remind us that persecution began on a local level – in neighbourhoods, in homes, and at the heart of society.
