Jacob Guttmann traded in undergarments. The couple lived in Wilhelmsburg until 1936, then moved to Hamburg. They lived on Hochallee and Oderfeldstraße before they were forced to move into the “Jews’ house” at Bornstraße 18, at which address they received their deportation orders. Their only daughter Edith emigrated to the US in 1938. Her parents apparently intended to join her there in the late 1930s, but they were not able to. By April 1941, the couple’s entire fortune had shrunk to only 827 Reichsmarks.
