Ernst Mittelbach was born in Hamburg on 31 Dec. 1903 as the son of the vocational school teacher Carl Mittelbach and his wife Magda Boya, née Möller. He studied engineering and worked as a vocational school teacher at various schools. At the end of his life, he taught as a senior vocational school teacher at the Vocational School for Aviation Technology (Gewerbeschule für Flugtechnik) on Brekelbaumspark in Borgfelde. On 7 Oct. 1938, he married Kate Margaret Davis.

As a member of the Jacobs-Bästlein-Abshagen resistance group, he was charged with “preparation to high treason” (“Vorbereitung zum Hochverrat”) on 31 Jan. 1944, sentenced to death, and executed along with Karl Otto Mende and Kurt Vorpahl (see corresponding entry) in the pretrial detention facility at Holstenwall 3 in the afternoon of 26 Apr. 1944. The chief of police gave notice of his beheading to the Hamburg records office only five months later.
