The couple had two children who were able to emigrate to the USA: Werner and Lilo. The family had lived in Hamburg in a spacious house at Sierichstrasse 152. On 19 July 1942, Emmy and Ignatz Stern were deported to Theresienstadt. Ignatz died there on 15 August 1942; his wife, on 20 February 1943. On 28 December 1945, there appeared this notice in the New York Jewish newspaper, Aufbau:
“Our most deeply beloved parents and parents-in-law, Dr. med. Ignaz Stern and Emmy Stern née Jacoby (of Hamburg) passed away two years ago in Theresienstadt. Our longing to be reunited and our wish to afford them a carefree life in their twilight years remained unfulfilled.
