Marie Mendel, born 1/25/1865, deported to Theresienstadt on 7/19/1942, deported to Treblinka 9/21/1942

Carl-Petersen-Strasse 88 (Mittelstrasse 88)

Marie Mendel was born on January 1st, 1865 in Rummelsburg, Pomerania. We do not know when and why she came to Hamburg. She joined the German-Israelitic Community of Hamburg on May 24th, 1935. She was single and lived from a minimal pension. In 1940, she received winter aid payments from the Community.

Her financial situation only allowed her to sub-rent a room first at Mittelstrasse 88, from May 2nd, 1937 at Jägerstrasse 29, from March 1st, 1940 at Rappstrasse 6. From there, she finally had to move to the Minkel Salomon David Kalker Foundation, a "Jews’ house”, Rutschbahn 25a. She belonged to the transport that left Hamburg for the Theresienstadt Ghetto on July 19th, 1942. She died there two months after arrival, aged 78.
