Bernhard was born in Eystrup near Hanover as the son of the locksmith David Hirsch and his wife Sophie. Later he moved with both his siblings Louis Hirsch and Jenny Hirsch to Hamburg, his parents remained in Eystrup.

He married Martha, née Oppenheim. The couple first lived at Weidenalle 10, not far from his brother Louis and his wife Dora who lived at number 59. Bernhard worked for a debt collection agency until he became unemployed in 1937. Then, as a sales representative, he traveled throughout Germany.

Bernhard’s and Martha’s daughter Ruth was born in 1913, followed three years later by her brother Egon. Egon Hirsch only lived about nine months before dying at the Israelite Hospital.

Ruth trained as a seamstress and already had her own small income as a 15-year-old. At the age of 21, she gave birth to an illegitimate son whom she named Heinz Adolf Hirsch. The documents of the May 1939 census show his origin as half Jewish while the other half is noted as unclear. That could mean that his father was either not Jewish or perhaps Ruth simply did not wish to reveal his name. Regardless of whether Heinz Adolf’s "race” was half Jewish, the illegitimate child of a Jewish mother with an unknown father was treated as a Jew.

On 18 Nov. 1941, the four members of the Hirsch Family were deported to Minsk. Bernhard’s sister Jenny Hirsch was on the deportation train. None of them survived.

Bernhard’s brother Louis and his wife Dora died in Riga where they had been deported on 6 Dec.
