Rosa (Roza) Hirsch, born 7 Apr. 1886 in Kirchberg, deported 25 Oct. 1941 to Lodz, date of death unknown

Simon-von-Utrecht-Straße 4 (Eckernförderstraße 4), Stolperstein Oberstraße 5

The Jewish nurse Rosa Hirsch came from Kirchberg where she was born on 7 April 1886 as the daughter of Daniel and Elise Hirsch, née Heinemann. There is no record of when she moved to the Hanseatic city. According to her tax card, she did not join the Jewish Community in Hamburg until 12 Feb. 1939. From April 1939 Rosa Hirsch worked as a "caregiver" at the Israelite Hospital and lived there in the nurses’ dormitory.

When the Jewish Hospital was forced to give up its original location on the then Eckernförderstraße in Sept. 1939 and moved to Johnsallee, she was housed with other nurses in the community’s own building at Beneckestraße 6. Over the following months, she changed her living quarters several times. Her final address was noted on the deportation list as Oberstraße 5 in Eimsbüttel. From there she was deported to the Lodz Ghetto on 25 Oct. 1941 where she lived at "Altmarkt 2, apartment 18". Presumably on 11 Jan. 1942 she received notification that she was scheduled for "resettlement". According to the Lodz Ghetto Chronicle, from 16 Jan. 1942 around 700 people were deported from the ghetto daily, taken to the Chelmno extermination camp and killed. The nurse Rosa Hirsch must have been on one of those transports.

Shortly before going to print, we learned that a Stolperstein was laid for Rosa Hirsch at her last place of residence Oberstraße 5.
